Maybe if they had listened,
they would not be spent mortar shells
dancing on insignificant strings
maybe if they had read the banners,
they would not need microscopes to conjure fine print
of truth in big letters of wakefulness screaming
in silent swish of cold shower.
If only they did not shower only on Sundays,
they just might be clean enough to borrow Kofi’s old coat.
